1987 was an awesome year for skateboarding. I was 17 years old and had just started my first job. Skateboarding was blowing up around our town, ramps being built, and there was a growing crowd of skaters, coming of age. We were watching and participating in the morphing rebirth of skateboard culture. We didn’t have YouTube… no Facebook or MySpace. We had skate mags and we rented videos.

At the top of the video list was “The Search for Animal Chin”. Through it, the Powell Peralta crew to many of us became iconic. On a summer day back in my yesteryear I learned that their would be a Powell Peralta demo held at our local mall. When the day of the demo arrived, I had my “Kodak 110″ handy. It’s been a lot of years since that day, and indeed most of the photos I took have been lost or destroyed over the years. Here you see what’s left of a fantastic summer day back in 1987. Can you imagine the stoke worked up ? After the demo we skated our hearts out for days on end with the memory fresh in our minds.

The stoke is still with me… and I thank those skaters for coming to our home and showing us what’s possible with the art and sport of skateboarding. A special thanks to Mike V. for making this shot possible. I’ve been showing it to folks for over two decades and now you get to see it too.

    Steve-

That’s a great story and a great photo. I am fairly certain your photo was shot in Summer 87 when the Tour stopped at the Charles Town Square Mall in North Charleston, SC? Steve Saiz, Adrian Demain and Per Werlinder were on the bill, too. I am also certain that I was in that crowd at that demo that day, too. The first issue of a ‘zine I did called Streetscribe (with Kevin E. Taylor) debuted a few weeks after this and featured photos from the event. You should add more of your photos to the SK843 group when you can…

(BTW- I really dig the new ‘Wastelands’ spot up on King Street that you and Horne and Bob and a few other made! I haven’t ridden it, but it totally reminds me of the Junkyard on Sullivan’s Island.)

Of course man… no problem. Was my pleasure. Really stoked to see the pic on the site here.

You have an open invitation to skate here…. check my photos to see the bowls, etc… The in-house bowl is badass.

There’s a link to the pics on my website.

    Holler anytime,

    Steve A.

Classic photo. It reminds me of the silhouettes used on the NBA, MLB emblems. This one could be used as a skateboarding logo.
